Volunteering at Worthy Down Halt on Sunday 16 September 2018

11 hard working volunteers from Worthys Conservation Volunteers, The Watercress Way trustees and local enthusiasts spent a sunny afternoon at Worthy Down Halt.The platform which was completely cleared in the spring showed the resilience of nature in producing new growth. Previous efforts meant that there were now very few stinging nettles however, the dog wood and clematis were back in force.With the aid of a brushcutter, loppers, shears and rakes the volunteers set to work clearing the path and cutting back the new growth.This is to ensure that the path is safe to use by all and to encourage biodiversity. The wild liquorice plant still flourishes at the end of the platform.Three trustees are undergoing training in the use of brushcutters by The South Downs National Park in October.The SDNP have kindly donated some additional brushcutters so soon our trained volunteers will be able to safely complete the clearance.Each brushcutter needs at least 3 enthusiastic rakers to remove the debris and tidy up so extra hands would be very helpful.We will post updates of future activity on the website, Facebook and Twitter.If you wish to be emailed about these opportunities please contact info@thewatercressway.org.uk and we will add you to our distribution list.The Watercress Way Trustees wishes to thank all those involved.A lot was accomplished in 3 hours as the pictures demonstrate.Mike CollisSecretary
