Worthys Festival Walk Sunday 15 September 2019

Trustees Kim, Jackie and Kay were delighted to be joined by 32  people (including 4 children, plus 7 dogs) on a beautiful Indian summer dayAll enjoyed a 5 mile walk covering railway heritage and ecology. We didn’t quite manage to do the whole trail planned because of lots of stops and chats.We

• hunted  for a fog hut for Victorian railway workers to shelter in before putting a warning on the railway in inclement weather, hazel nuts chewed by dormice, rare wild liquorice and the Watercress Way trail of geocaches
• stood  on a villa, the infilled railway cutting of Mid Hants line, the track of the Didcot-Newbury-Southampton line, the D Day Worthy Down platforms and on historic livestock droves
• dreamed of the advantages of a trail for walkers and cyclists and horse riders from Kings Worthy to Alresford when we stood on Lovedon Lane old railway bridge
• imagined pounding hoofs from Winchester racecourse, the roar of Spitfires on first flights from Worthy Down in WW2 and wondered what  soldiers in surrounding pill boxes still intact along the old railway would be thinking as impending invasion loomed .
